11 Things you Should Know to Keep Your Guinea Pig Happy

Do you guys like guinea pigs? I didn't really until I actually had one. I learned a lot of things and I would like to share 10 ways to keep your guinea pig happy!

1. Guinea pigs love space. If you own one, you should know they need a lot of space. All you have to keep in mind is that the more space you have, the better! So, your guinea pig will be very happy if you give it a lot of room.

2. A guinea pig loves to have a clean environment. It will be happy if you keep its cage clean regularly. This does not mean you have to change its bedding every day, but pick up droppings and wet patches. (You do need to change the bedding about once a week.)

3. A very important thing I learned (which was in every single book I read) is that guinea pigs are social animals. They live in herds in the wild. They NEED a companion living with them. It is best if you buy two guinea pigs or more of the same and gender. For example, two girls or two boys. Your guinea pig can become sick if it does not have another "friend" living with it.

4. Your guinea pig will be happy if you keep its food bowl clean with fresh food in it all the time.

5. Your guinea pig's water bottle should be filled up with clean water all the time. They will be very happy.

6. Guinea pig's teeth never stop growing. Your pet will be happy if it has chewable toys to help keep the teeth healthy, strong and the length they should be.

7. Guinea pigs need to be kept warm and dry. Their bedding should be dry, and make sure you keep your pets warm in the winter.

8. Guinea's LOVE to go outside and run. It is a great way to get them out of the cage and exercise. They love being out in the warm sun, but make sure they are not out too long because they can easily get overheated. Your guinea pig will be happy if you take it out to explore.

9. They absaloutly love treats. They like lettuce (never iceberg, it is poisonous), bell peppers (red has more vitamin C), carrots, broccoli (not a lot because it can make your pet gassy), oranges (are good because they contain a lot of vitamin c), cilantro, parsley, grapes, and more. Your guinea pig is going to be VERY happy if you give him treats once in a while.

10. Guinea pigs like cuddling. They will be happy if you hold them and even talk to them. Once it gets to know you well, it will love it when you give it attention. ;-)

11. Finally, guinea pigs like hiding. Make sure you provide a place to hide in its cage. It will be very happy. They love to hide in the wild.
